AF8 Roadshow: The Science Beneath Our Feet
The first AF8 Roadshow, The Science Beneath Our Feet, will tour the six South Island CDEM regions in March-April 2019, bringing together secondary students, scientists and CDEM in a conversation about the Alpine Fault earthquake hazard.
AF8 is working with local emergency management teams to deliver this exciting classroom experience, which is linked to the New Zealand Curriculum and features science around the Alpine Fault and readiness messaging from CDEM. Complementing these school visits will be a series of science talks with communities, where some of AF8’s leading scientists will showcase the latest research and developments in planning for the next Alpine Fault earthquake.
While we can’t predict when earthquakes will occur, scientific research has shown that the Alpine Fault has a history of generating regular, large earthquakes. The next major Alpine Fault event is likely to occur within the lifetime of most of us, or our children and young people, for whom this is likely to have major short and long-term impacts. It is vital that all community members not just understand the geology underneath their feet but also what science has to say about how to respond in the event of a large earthquake occurring, so we can prepare and take action.
AF8 is aimed at improving knowledge of, readiness for and a collective resilience to a magnitude 8 earthquake on the Alpine Fault. The Science Beneath Our Feet builds on the projects extensive science outreach programme and collaborative approach to preparedness, extending this engagement to schools and communities in areas identified by the AF8 Scenario as most likely to be affected by an AF8 event.
By sharing Alpine Fault hazard and impact research, this project aims to equip the next important generation of decision makers in the Alpine Fault region with the knowledge and interest to engage with Alpine Fault science, and what this information means for their community.
